Did you hear that the last Tasmanian Devil outside of Australia alive is right here in Indiana? It's in the Fort Wayne Zoo, close to where I live (Huntington). The zoo says the the poor thing is very old & may only live a few more years . Think of it, the LAST Tasmanian Devil outside of Aussie is here, in Indiana! 8O This is the only place you'll see a Tasmanian Devil outside of Tasmania. OMG!

When I went to the San Diego mZoo in April, I saw a Tasmanian devil, maybe they transfered it?

There were two Tasmanian Devils in the Fort Wayne Zoo. The female died not too long ago, not in April though, later than that! The male remains & is the very last Tazzy outside of Aussie
. No buts about it!

umm there are other devils out side of tasmania for instance steve erwin aka crocodile hunter has them at his zoo and he lives on the main land so there are others out side of tasmania(but none are wild out of tas as far as wer know *stupid settlers and ther ferral animals and there stupid dingos*)
--------------------
superlion
It's the last one on US Soil. (according to the article) so there could be some in zoos in several other countries...
--------------------
kielo91
Actually, on my news station, they said that this is the very last one outside of Tasmania. I don't think there are any in other zoos in other countries. Maybe I misheard them.. who knows...

not Tasmania specifically, just Australia

Wally
sorry but aren't the devils inside tasmania more important then the devils outside?
--------------------
jwa1107
yes, I would say the ones in the wilds of Tasmania would rank a bit more important than those in captivity
but for anyone not in Australia to see one, you have to go to Australia or Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA.
--------------------
robbieb
no there equaly important thijnk about it what if dingos make it to tasmania then the ones there are gone just like on the main land so we need staple pouplations of them in captivity incase we need to release them
--------------------
superlion
But if you
a. only have one or two in captivity outside of Tasmania
or
b. End up with a bunch of tasmanian devils that do not know how to hunt
Then it's not necessarily such a good thing.

Preserving a species isn't only keeping it alive but to keep its behavior alive.
--------------------
superlion
Well, I wouldn't put it that way, but my wildlife teacher would say the whole point of preserving a species is to preserve the biodiversity in its natural habitat.

Crocsrule
Tasmanian devils don't hunt. Scavengers is what they are.
--------------------
superlion
Well, find food regardless (and raise young, etc)
--------------------
Crocsrule
So basically they'd follow people around looking for food.

Sad end to the tasmanian devil. I'll never see one in real life. *sniff*

take a vacation to Indiana!

Well, you could go to the Indiana Imax theater. Or the Fort Wayne Zoo, along with the Indianapolis zoo. You could go to Spring Mills down in southern IN, it's a HUGE park. Close there, are caverns. I can't remember the name of the caverns, but I've been there. It's really neat! You ride in this boat down in the caverns, which is full of 4-15 ft. deep water. In there, are blind fish. They literally are blind! 8O You could take a trip to the Indy 500 or the Indianapolis Children's Museum. Travel to Science Central in Fort Wayne, or go to FW (Fort Wayne) to see the largest flag in the U.S! Come to Huntington for the Forks of the Wabash or the Dan Quayle Museum. Huntington was once crowned "The City of Trees", but FW later stole that award & now we're just... poop.. I'm sure if you came here, you'd find other neat things to do, if it doesn't take a whole lot to amuse you. But to see the last Tazzy outside of Aussie, come to FW Zoo. It's a wonderful zoo as well!

The Fort Wayne Children's Zoo is home to the only Tasmanian devil outside Australia now that a member of the marsupial species has died at the San Diego Zoo.
International Species Inventory System records now show that 6-year-old Coolah at the Fort Wayne zoo is the last devil not living in its homeland, zoo officials said.
