The Story of White Shadow
By: Kari Youknowwho

Humans are full of curiosity. Most dream of being rich, or getting the job of their dreams. In the dreams of few, however, live creatures so beautiful and majestic, they inspire the few humans that love them. The only things the humans have to do are hold on to those dreams, and cherish them.
White Shadow is a white wolf, and his kind inspires many of the few people who love animals. His story, however, is an important key, if you want to believe in him.
Near the Canadian border in Alaska, a pack of wolves surround the pack den. Only two pups are born, Dark Shade and White Shadow. The pack rejoices, and sings to the other packs. “We will be stronger!” they howl to the heavens. Little do they know, soon they shall become weaker.
The next year, the famine struck. The alpha female became weak, and became part of the earth. Her pups became weaker, and mourned over their mother. Their father nipped and snarled at them. They were no longer pups, but young wolves.
Two years later, the famine seized. Elk and caribou were once again plentiful. White Shadow’s father had run off, for Dark Shade had found a mate and became more powerful than his father. He had become alpha over his weak father. Tint of Light became the pack’s alpha female. White Shadow had found a mate too, but didn’t dare to challenge his brother’s authority. Daylight Gleam was White Shadow’s mate. Her name suited her well. She was light gray like her sister, Tint of Light.
Before mating season that year, White Shadow returned to the prey the pack had feasted on earlier that morning. He heard a faint whimper as he approached the kill. His ears twitched. All his senses concentrated on where the whimper had come from.
He sniffed the air. A pup! He followed the scent, and was lead to a patch of lichens. The pup whimpered again. He sniffed around the pup, to identify where it came from. It was a four-month-old female pup. It was not of his kind, but a different species of wolf. He picked up the pup by it’s scruff, and trotted off back to the pack.
He set the pup down. The pack studied the weak pup. With disapproving eyes they gazed at White Shadow. Even his mate turned against him. His brother snarled at the pup. Dark Shade’s dark gray fur stood at its ends, and he threatened the weak pup. White Shadow picked up the pup and scurried off.

When he approached the edge of his pack’s territory, he placed the pup on the ground. He studied her, and found out why his pack did not except her. She was a red wolf, from a warm and sunny place he had never wandered to. Her fur was not as thick as his, which was a disadvantage on the frozen tundra. He wondered where her parents were.
The pup’s parents’ smell on her was faint. Her fur shined in the sun with the snow. Shining. Her underside was covered with pure white snow, which reminded him of the snow’s glory. Glory. Shining Glory! That is what he would call her.
Nearby a pack howled. The Shadow pack. Their names were unknown, and all of their pelts’ colors were not seeable to the human race. No human had discovered their pack, which was a good sign to White Shadow. He picked up Shining Glory, and trotted into the Shadow Pack’s territory.
The alpha female spotted White Shadow and the pup first. She encouraged him to join the pack. He took a step further into the Shadow territory, but didn’t go any farther. Somewhere, a snarl warned him to not set another paw into the territory.
The alpha male let out yet another snarl. He approached White Shadow and Shining Glory, showing his teeth. White Shadow lowered himself to the ground, not wanting to anger the alpha. The alpha was nothing but a lurking shadow creature, stalking his prey. White Shadow tucked his tail under his body, submitting to the alpha even more.

This part is a little short, but here it is!

The alpha growled as if saying, “Fine, you can join the pack. But stay away from my mate.” White Shadow nodded, and placed Shining Glory on the ground. Holding her in his mouth for so long put a strain on his glistening teeth.
The alpha female, later to be known to humans when the barrier of mankind vs. beast would break, as the Shadow Wolfess, cocked her head as if to say, “He doesn’t mean it. He’s just protective.”
White Shadow took the statement as an invitation. He proceeded after the Shadow Wolfess, with Shining Glory trying to tackle his silky tail.
The pack was not very large in size of numbers, but large in regular size. One wolfess in particular seemed to take interest in him. She was Quiet Beauty, although White Shadow did not see her smile at him. Quiet Beauty was quite large, for a wolf anyway. Her coat was dark gray, with streaks of black here and there.
A year later, when Shining Glory was becoming more mature, and aching to find a mate and pack of her own, began to start wandering away from the pack. She would go about a half mile then return to her worried ‘father’. Every time she returned, White Shadow would scold her, telling her not to continue her little journeys. She would just look at him with her green emeralds as to tell him, “You worry too much.”
White Shadow was beginning to worry even more when her adventures began to lengthen in distance as well as time.
